The Doolittle Tokyo Raiders

It was a simple plan with a single objective, yet impossibly difficult and fraught with danger at every step. Within four short months of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Hornet would sail to within range of the Japanese coast and launch sixteen heavily-laden B-25 bombers, never previously flown off the deck of a carrier, to make a daring strike against major Japanese cities. With each aircraft weighed down by a ton of bombs and fuel to fly 2400 miles, take-off would be marginal; landing a twin engine bomber back on the short deck, impossible. The crews would have to fly on towards China and make the best they could of survival.

At 8:00am on the morning of 18 April, 1942 Admiral Halsey flashed a message to Hornet to launch aircraft; the klaxon aboard ship boomed "Army pilots, man yourplanes!'"In worsening weather, and with mountainous waves sending spray over the bow, Hornet's deck was a hive of activity as the crews ran to their aircraft. By 8:20, with engines warmed and magnetos checked, mission leader Lieutenant-

Colonel Jimmy Doolittle gave the thumbs-up to the deck launching officer. Releasing brakes, he pushed the throttle levers to the stops, and gunned his heavy bomber towards the heaving bow of the ship, timing his run to coincide with maximum pitch of the deck. The B-25 became airborne with feet to spare.

Inspired by his many meetings with survivors of the raid, Robert Taylor has created a wonderfully faithful recreation of the scene as Jimmy Doolittle lifts his heavily laden B-25 off the deck. Fifteen gallant crews, with engines turning, are lined up and ready to follow. These gallant "DoolittleTokyo Raiders" struck the first blow to the very heart of the Japanese Empire, putting fear into the minds of the nation's leaders, causing the Japanese to divert aircraft and equipment from offensive operations to the defence of their homeland. A tiny raid by the standards of what was to come, but massively important in the context of the war in the Pacific. Another Robert Taylor masterpiece.

The complete edition is personally signed by artist Robert Taylor, and individually hand-numbered; together with the signatures of FIVE Doolittle Raider veterans who took part in the historic Tokyo Raid.

Richard Cole was the co-pilot of General Doolittle's aircraft - Plane #1 -that attacked the city of Tokyo. Immediately following the attack they flew on to mainland China where he bailed out, landing in a pine tree at the top of Tien Mushen mountain, approximately 70 miles north of Chuchow. At day-break the following day, using his compass, he walked west to try and make contact with friendly Chinese forces, which by staying to high ground, he eventually did. Afterwards he remained in China flying bombing missions and transport missions over the 'Hump' for fifteen months.

Navigator on 'Doc' Watson's aircraft - Plane #9 - they attacked a factory in Kawasaki on Tokyo Bay, flying on to China and bailing out 300 miles inland over Kiangsi Province. On landing he was held overnight by Nationalist Chinese forces. Three members of his crew were taken prisoner by the Chinese until all the crew were indentified and finally released. Over a period of time they arrived in Chungking, sent to India, and eventually back to the States, arriving home in late June 1942. Subsequently he was posted to England to join a B-26 Group, and then flew combat in North Africa, until shot down and captured by the Germans in July 1943. He remained a prisoner of war until liberated in May 1945.

Edwin Horton was the Gunner on Plane #10, whose pilot was Richard Joyce. They attacked the factory of the Japan Special Steel Company and other targets before straffing an enemy fighter airfield. After the raid they flew on to China, bailing out by parachute and, helped by local Chinese, eventually managed to reach safety.

Davy Jones was the pilot and Captain of Plane #5 that attacked the waterfront of Tokyo, before flying on to Chusien Province, China — their intended final destination, and bailed out by parachute. By the following night all of his crew had found each other, and they journeyed to Chungking over the next two weeks. They had returned to the US by July. After the Tokyo raid he flew B-26s in Europe before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Germans until liberated in April 1945.

Flight engineer and gunner on Harold Watson's B-25 - Plane #9, they targeted a factory on Tokyo Bay in the town of Kawasaki. Flying on to mainland China, they were briefly held by Nationalist Chinese allies, before being escorted to Chungking, and from there to India, and finally back to the United States. David Thatcher was then posted to fly combat based in North Africa and England.

Only 25 Canvas Giclée Proofs will be issued in this new Robert Taylor edition, and each one will be individually signed by the artist Robert Taylor in oil paint. All THIRTEEN of the veterans whose signatures appear on the Collectors Edition paper print will individually sign the unique Presentation Certificate issued with each Giclee Canvas Proof.

To replicate the artist's original painting so faithfully, each print is individually worked by a specialist master printer laying down solid colour on canvas, so that only the experienced eye can distinguish them from the original.

So life-like is the result it is necessary for us to imprint the words "this is a giclee print reproduction" on the reverse of the canvas to ensure they are never mistaken for the original.

General 'Jimmy' Doolittle *s lifetime spanned the entire era of aviation from the Wright Brothers to astronauts landing on the moon. An Army pilot at 17, he took to dare-devil stunt-flying, air racing, and record breaking. With a Doctorate in aeronautical sciences, he helped pioneer instrument flying, and the development of high-octane aviation fuel. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he masterminded and led the historic raid on Tokyo, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Promoted to General, he commanded the air war over Italy and North Africa, later taking command of the entire US Eighth Air Force in Europe. In a lifetime packed with adventure, 'Jimmy' Doolittle was truly one of the 20* Century's great heroes.

Having already sunk the first Japanese submarine on 24 December 1941, Everett Holstrom was the Captain and pilot of Plane #4, Encountering stiff resistance from Japanese fighters, the guns and turrets of his aircraft were put out of action. Flying on to China, he and his crew bailed out, landing by parachute at night hi a driving rain storm. After three days he was picked up by Chinese partisans who helped him escape to free China.

Howard Sessler was Navigator and Bombardier on Plane #15 captained by pilot Don Smith. They attacked and bombed targets in Kobe, and ditched in die sea just off the coast of China. Chinese guerillas helped them through the Japanese lines to Chungking, and then home through India and across the South Atlantic.

Co-pilot of Plane #10 that attacked the Japan Special Steel Company and an enemy airfied, Royden Stork was also the Photographic Officer on the raid with cameras installed in each bomb bay. Bailing out over China he knocked himself out on landing. Regaining consciousness he waited for dawn, and was befriended by a local magistrate who helped him escape. Later he flew with the 10th Air Force in India, flying missions over Japanese territory until it was discovered that the Japanese had put a $5,000 reward on all who had participated in the Tokyo Raid.

Co-pilot of Plane #15 assigned to attack waterfront targets in the city of Kobe. After thee attack they crash-landed in the sea off the coast of China, coming ashore, with the aid of life-vests, on a small Chinese island where they made contact with Chinese resistance fighters who guided them out of Japanese held territory. Eventually he was picked up by a US army transport plane for return to the US.

2nd Lieutenant WILLIAM L. BIRCH (Main print) William Birch was the Bombadier on William Farrows B-25 - Plane #11. Their task was to bomb the fuel tank factory at Nagoya before flying on to China. After bailing out he was one of the eight Raiders captured by the Japanese.

Colonel WlLLIAM M. BOWER (Companion print) Captain and pilot of the Plane #12 that attacked and bombed the Yokosuka auto-factory in Yokohama. Flying on to China, he and his crew bailed out and found Loyalist Chinese forces to escort them to safety. He was later Group Commanding Officer of the 428th BS, 310th Bomb Group, and the 57th Bomb Wing.

Lieutenant Colonel ROBERT L. KITE (Companion print) Co-pilot onPlane #16 that attacked the Nagoya fuel tank factory before flying on to China. He bailed but ran into Japanese soldiers and was captured. Eight Doohttle Raiders were captured, taken to Tokyo, where six months later three were executed. Two years later one died from starvation. Robert returned to the US at the end of war.

Lieutenant Colonel FRANK. A. KAPPELER (Main print) Joining the US Navy in 1936, Frank Kappeler transferred over to the Air Corps as a navigator in 1941. On the Tokyo raid he was Navigator on Plane #11. He remained in China until August 1942, after which he was reassigned to Europe for the remainder of the war.

Aged 24, Tung-Sheng Liu was a local Chinese citizen who helped one of the Doolittle crews evade capture by the Japanese. He acted as interpreter between the raiders and sympathetic Chinese, and after 10 days of travel, he and his friends were able to deliver the crew safely to Chungking. After the war in 1946, Liu was invited by the Raiders to become an official 'Honorary' Doolittle Raider.

Lieutenant Colonel CHASE J. NIELSON (Companion print) Chase Nielsen was the Navigator on Plane #6 that bombed a steel mill north of Tokyo, but bailing out over China after the raid he was captured by the Japanese forces and spent the next 3 1/2 years as a prisoner of war.

Captain CHARLES J. OZUK Jr (Companion print) Charles Ozuk was the Navigator on Plane #3, piloted by Robert Gray, which flew through heavy AA fire to bomb industrial areas of Tokyo and straffe a military barracks before flying on to China. After bailing out they were assisted by local Chinese to reach safety. Charles remained in the Chinese theatre to fly bombing missions.

Master Sergeant EDWARD J. SAYLOR (Companion print) Engineer on Plane #15, that attacked waterfront targets in Kobe. They crash-landed in the sea just off the coast of the Chinese mainland, swimming ashore. Helped by fishermen and Resistance fighters, they evaded capture to reach the safety of the Chinese lines.
